Assam Celebrates State Sports Day 2026 with a Tribute to Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah

State Sports Day 2026 Celebrated in Guwahati

The Assam Department of Sports & Youth Welfare hosted the State Sports Day 2026 at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi (KNCB) Indoor Stadium in Guwahati today. The event was honored by the presence of Biswajit Daimary, the Minister for Sports & Youth Welfare, who served as the Chief Guest.

Honoring a Sporting Icon

During his address, the minister emphasized that State Sports Day serves as a moment to honor the extraordinary legacy of Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah. His accomplishments have motivated countless athletes in Assam and the Northeast region. Daimary reaffirmed the Assam government's dedication to fostering a robust sporting environment by enhancing infrastructure, training facilities, and opportunities for young athletes.

A Day of Remembrance

Since 2021, State Sports Day has been celebrated annually on September 3, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the legendary athlete Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah. This day acknowledges his significant contributions to Indian athletics and his remarkable achievements. Baruah made history at the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok by becoming the first Assamese athlete to secure a gold medal, bringing pride to both Assam and India. He was also the first athlete from Assam and the Northeast to be awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award.

Encouraging Future Athletes

The event aims to cultivate a strong sporting culture among Assam's youth, raising awareness about the significance of sports, physical fitness, and active living. It also seeks to motivate budding athletes by showcasing the achievements and legacies of Assam's sports heroes.

Awards Ceremony

The celebration included the ceremonial distribution of various awards, such as the State Sports Awards, NCC–Bir Chilarai Awards, and NSS Assam State Awards, recognizing individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions and service.
