On June 21, Assam celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga with widespread participation across the state. The main event at the Brahmaputra Riverfront featured Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who emphasized the importance of yoga for all age groups. With over 3.5 million participants across 23,498 villages, the event showcased the state's commitment to health and wellness. Despite challenges like heavy rainfall, celebrations continued in various districts, highlighting the unifying spirit of yoga. Prime Minister Modi also led a national observance, reinforcing yoga's role in promoting health and unity.

Guwahati, June 21: Assam participated in the nationwide celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga on Sunday, with significant involvement reported across various districts under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing."


The main event took place at the Brahmaputra Riverfront in Guwahati, where Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma engaged in a large yoga session organized by the National AYUSH Mission, Assam.


Sitharaman highlighted the theme's focus on the significance of yoga for all age groups, emphasizing the importance of enhancing both lifespan and "healthspan," which refers to the duration of life spent in good health.


Chief Minister Sarma expressed pride in hosting the Union Finance Minister and noted the overwhelming response to the event.


He further mentioned that yoga sessions were simultaneously held in 23,498 villages across 37,383 venues statewide.


"We estimate that over 3.5 million individuals participated in the Yoga Day celebrations across Assam, including members of self-help groups, youth, and people from diverse backgrounds," Sarma stated.


On social media, the Chief Minister shared his experience of joining the event at the Brahmaputra Riverfront alongside Sitharaman as part of the state's Yoga Day observance.


The celebrations were widespread, extending to various districts and co-districts throughout Assam.


In Sadiya, officials, students, yoga enthusiasts, and local residents took part in sessions following the Common Yoga Protocol, reaffirming commitments to the FIT India Movement.

In Tamulpur, a district-level event was conducted at the Durga Mandir premises, where Assam Cabinet Minister Biswajit Daimary served as the chief guest, encouraging attendees to incorporate yoga into their daily routines for better physical and mental health. Participants engaged in yoga asanas, pranayama, and meditation for 45 minutes.

Despite heavy rainfall since Friday night, celebrations in Chirang district proceeded at the District Parade Ground in Kajalgaon. Sidli-Chirang MLA Paniram Brahma, Deputy Commissioner Madhusudan Nath, and other officials participated alongside students, security personnel, and local residents. Brahma emphasized the necessity of yoga in daily life and advocated for its regular practice.

Earlier that day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national observance from Kolkata's Red Road, performing the Common Yoga Protocol with thousands of participants. In his address, Modi remarked that the spirit of yoga had unified the nation, with celebrations spanning from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean and from Bengal to Saurashtra.
