Assam Cabinet Approves Land Settlement for Indigenous Families
Land Settlement Initiative in Dhemaji
Guwahati, August 1: On Thursday, the State Cabinet sanctioned a land settlement plan benefiting 1,742 indigenous families who are landless and live within 1-5 km of Dhemaji municipal town.
The boundary of Dhemaji municipal town will be adjusted from 5 km to 1 km. This decision considers the significant tribal population residing in nearby villages with ancestral land, many of whom were excluded due to the limited time frame for submitting applications under Mission Basundhara 2.0.
Following this boundary adjustment, the approval level, land quantum, and premium rates for areas between 1 km and 5 km will be treated as rural land.
Indigenous families who previously submitted applications will receive a one-time relief due to the boundary reduction, allowing them to submit their applications to the district commissioner by October 31, 2025.
Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the inclusion of the Ahom, Matak, Moran, Chutia, Gorkha, Tea garden, and Adivasi communities in the list of protected classes in the Tirap Tribal Belt. This applies to those who have occupied land prior to 2011, as per the authority granted by sub-section (2) of section 160 of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation.
