Assam Cabinet Approves Implementation of Uniform Civil Code Excluding Tribals

Assam's Cabinet Decision on Uniform Civil Code

The Assam Cabinet has granted approval for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state as of Wednesday. However, it has been decided that tribal communities will be exempt from its provisions. This announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

During a press conference following the first cabinet meeting of his second term, Sarma stated that the UCC bill will be introduced in the new assembly on May 26.

He remarked, “This is a significant decision made in our cabinet's inaugural meeting and aligns with the promises we made during the elections.” Sarma noted that states like Uttarakhand, Goa, and Gujarat have already implemented the UCC, but his government has tailored it to meet the specific needs of Assam.

He further clarified, “We have completely excluded the tribal population from the UCC's scope. All customs, traditions, and practices followed by the people of Assam will remain outside the UCC.” The UCC will regulate matters related to inheritance, marriage, live-in relationships, and the mandatory registration of marriages and divorces.
