Guwahati, July 26: As devastating floods continue to impact Upper Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party aims to collect ₹12 crore to provide clothing for approximately four lakh individuals affected by the floods across the state.
During the Mann Ki Baat programme in Azara, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the party would gather the necessary funds within the next four to five days.
“I encourage BJP members wishing to contribute up to ₹2,000 to submit their donations to their local MLA. For those wishing to donate more than ₹2,000, contributions can be made via the BJP’s official Facebook or X accounts, or through my personal accounts. Details for the party’s designated bank account will be shared, and donations can also be made by cheque,” he stated.
Additionally, the Chief Minister noted that BJP members from outside Assam have pledged their support for this initiative. “This funding will not come from the government but from the party workers. We have received assurances of assistance from BJP members outside Assam,” he added.
“On the government’s part, we are doing everything possible and will continue to do so. I urge all BJP workers to engage in flood relief efforts in any capacity they can. From BJP Assam Pradesh, we plan to distribute Mekhela Sador to two lakh women and clothing to two lakh children, which requires around ₹12 crore,” he further explained.
Previously, on July 22, Sarma had assured residents affected by the floods that there would be no lack of funds for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts.
In the meantime, the flood situation showed signs of improvement on Sunday, with water levels decreasing in most affected regions following a night of minimal rainfall. However, over 6.5 lakh individuals across six districts remain impacted, and the death toll from this year's floods has reached 66.
An official from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that water levels are gradually receding in many flood-affected areas of Upper Assam, particularly in Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat districts.
“We are optimistic that the situation will continue to improve throughout the day, facilitating more effective relief operations,” the official stated.
