Voter Participation and Enthusiasm

Guwahati, April 9: As the Assembly elections unfold, Assam has recorded a voter turnout of 59.63% by 1 PM, with polling activity intensifying across various districts as voters lined up at polling stations.


Despite sporadic rainfall in different regions, a significant number of voters participated, showcasing their commitment to the electoral process.


Key issues raised by voters included development, governance, and job opportunities.


A voter in Dispur expressed hope that the elected representatives would prioritize the needs of the populace, while a young voter in Sonitpur emphasized the importance of voting as a "democratic duty".


The festive atmosphere was evident at numerous polling locations, featuring decorations, selfie spots, and special provisions for elderly and differently-abled individuals.


Election officials ensured accessibility, providing wheelchair assistance at many polling centers.


Minor Disruptions and Incidents

However, some minor disruptions occurred due to EVM malfunctions at a few locations. Officials assured that faulty machines were swiftly replaced, minimizing any impact on the voting process.


In a tragic event, a polling official named Deben Horo (45) passed away while on duty at a polling station in Naduar constituency, found unconscious and later declared dead at a nearby hospital.


Officials confirmed that polling continued uninterrupted, with a reserve staff member promptly assigned to the station.


Additionally, a violent incident was reported at the Merapani Kalyanpur polling station in Golaghat, where a confrontation occurred between BJP booth president Savin Kurmi and Congress worker Mukut Haloi. Both were detained and received medical attention, with security personnel managing the situation.


Prominent Leaders Cast Their Votes

Throughout the morning, notable leaders and candidates participated in the voting process. Bhupen Kumar Borah, a BJP candidate who previously defected from Congress, cast his vote in Bihpuria, while NPP candidate Daniel Langthasa voted alongside his wife in Dima Hasao.


New BJP member Pradyut Bordoloi voted in Dispur, and AJP candidate Rajen Gohain, a former BJP leader, exercised his right in Barhampur.


In Jorhat, BJP candidate and sitting MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami voted at Nowsalia Primary School, while Union Minister Pabitra Margherita participated in the elections for the first time in his constituency, encouraging citizens to engage actively.


Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa also cast his vote, expressing confidence in the NDA securing a strong majority. BJP candidate Pijush Hazarika voted in Jagiroad with his family.


Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary and his wife, who is contesting her first election from Kokrajhar, also participated, expressing optimism about the NDA retaining power.


High Enthusiasm Across Districts

Enthusiasm remained high in districts like Hailakandi, Chirang, Biswanath, and Kokrajhar, where long queues formed early in the morning.


First-time voters and senior citizens showed remarkable turnout, many braving the rain to cast their votes.


In Chirang, UPPL candidate Ranjit Kumar Basumati and NDA candidate Paniram Brahma voted and encouraged public participation.


In Bijni, IPPL candidate Kamal Singh Narzary expressed confidence in his victory after voting, while BJP candidate Rupak Sharma also participated in the Nagaon-Batadrava constituency.


Despite some scattered incidents and weather-related challenges, polling across Assam remained largely peaceful and orderly until midday, with expectations of increased voter turnout in the afternoon.
