Nominations Surge in Assam Ahead of Assembly Elections

Guwahati, March 20: On Friday, Assam witnessed a significant uptick in nomination filings as influential figures from both the ruling coalition and the opposition officially entered the electoral race, signaling an important phase leading up to the Assembly elections.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spearheaded the day's activities by submitting his nomination for the Jalukbari constituency, following an impressive roadshow that started at the Khanapara Veterinary Field and concluded at the Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner’s office in Hengrabari.

The rally, which covered around 5.6 kilometers, was attended by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, son Nandil Biswa Sarma, and BJP MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi.

After filing his nomination, Sarma addressed the media, stating, “Today, I have submitted my nomination for the Jalukbari constituency. Many of my colleagues will also file their nominations today, while others are scheduled for March 23.”

Reflecting on his political journey, he remarked, “I first contested from Jalukbari in 1996 and faced defeat. However, since 2001, I have been victorious consistently. Despite the changes in delimitation, I trust I will continue to earn the people's support.”

Recognizing the difficulties of managing governance alongside campaigning, the Chief Minister mentioned that his agenda includes attending nearly five campaign meetings each day throughout the state.

“Given the limited time, I will strive to balance my statewide campaigning with connecting with the people in Jalukbari,” he added.

Sarma also indicated that the BJP and its allies are set to contest 102 constituencies but avoided making any premature predictions.

“It’s too soon to discuss victory or the Chief Minister’s position. Let’s first ensure the elections proceed smoothly,” he stated.

Having represented Jalukbari since 2001, Sarma is aiming for his sixth consecutive term.

BJP leader Pijush Hazarika also filed his nomination from Jagiroad, emphasizing the government's development initiatives.

“Over the past decade, we have been dedicated to serving the people. Their support is our greatest asset,” he remarked.

Other notable leaders who filed nominations on Friday include Ajanta Neog, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Biswajit Daimary, Rama Kanta Dewri, and AGP’s Prodip Hazarika.

On the opposition side, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi submitted his nomination from Sivasagar, expressing, “I am here to offer my respect and service to the people of Sivasagar. I seek your blessings.”

Additionally, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia filed their nominations from Khowang and Nazira, respectively.
