Guwahati, Apr 9: As Assam approaches its Assembly elections, the absence of cultural icon Zubeen Garg is profoundly felt in both political and cultural realms.
On Thursday, at a polling station in Kahilipara’s Bhagaduttapur area, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, made her way to vote despite health issues, highlighting her commitment to civic responsibility amidst personal grief.
“Voting is our duty, which is why I am here. Although I am not well and was discharged from the hospital just yesterday, I felt it was important to fulfill my responsibility as a citizen. I used to come here with Zubeen,” she shared.
Accompanying her was Garg’s sister, Pami Borthakur, who encouraged voters to make informed choices. “I urge everyone to vote thoughtfully,” she stated.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 during a trip to Singapore, and legal proceedings regarding his death are currently taking place in a fast-track court in Guwahati.
His absence is also impacting the cultural landscape of the state, especially with the Rongali (Bohag) Bihu festival approaching.
As the festival preparations continue, the gap left by Garg is unmistakable. His voice, which has long been a hallmark of Bihu celebrations, will now only resonate through recordings and cherished memories.
Famed singer and music director Manas Robin expressed that the people of Assam will feel Garg's absence deeply during this year's celebrations.
“In honor of the legendary singer, I will refrain from participating in any stage performances during the first week of Bihu,” he announced.
Describing Garg as “like a brother,” Robin also revealed plans for a documentary titled Manas-Zubeenor Jatra, which will explore their journey together, both on and off the stage.
He reflected on the current atmosphere, noting that the ongoing elections might also affect the festive spirit. “Bihu has always brought people together, transcending differences, and I hope that unity continues,” he added.
