Assam Assembly Elections: 789 Candidates Cleared After Nomination Scrutiny
Nomination Scrutiny Concludes in Assam
Guwahati, March 26: The examination of nomination papers for the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections has been finalized across all 126 constituencies, with 789 candidates deemed eligible to participate in the elections.
The scrutiny process commenced on March 24 and wrapped up on Tuesday, concluding with the finalization of proceedings in Barpeta and Dhekiajuli constituencies, which had been temporarily adjourned.
Out of 1,389 nomination papers submitted by 815 candidates, 789 have been validated, allowing these individuals to proceed in the electoral contest.
In Dhekiajuli, all 10 submitted nomination papers were approved. Conversely, in Barpeta, one nomination was rejected, resulting in three candidates remaining in the race. Notably, Congress candidate Mahananda Sarkar's nomination was invalidated, reducing the competition in that constituency.
Consequently, AGP candidate Dipak Kumar Das will now compete against two Independent candidates in Barpeta.
The Election Commission has established March 26 as the final date for candidates to withdraw their nominations. To date, three Independent candidates have already opted out.
With the scrutiny phase concluded, the electoral contest in Assam is advancing to the next stage, with the final candidate list anticipated following the withdrawal deadline.
