Assam Assembly Elections: 67 Candidates Withdraw Nominations, 722 Remain in Race
Final Day for Nominations in Assam Elections
On the last day for withdrawing nominations for the Assam Assembly elections, 67 candidates have opted out, leaving a total of 722 contenders in the fray, as reported by officials.
Among those who withdrew their nominations is Mohammad Aminul Islam from the National People's Party (NPP), representing the Manikachar seat, who recently resigned from the AIUDF. Additionally, four members from the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and one leader from the Gondwana Republic Party have also retracted their nominations.
All other candidates who withdrew are independents. Key figures still in the race include Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia from Congress, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, along with several ministers.
A total of 815 candidates submitted 1,389 nomination papers across 126 constituencies. After scrutiny, 789 candidates were deemed eligible. The elections are scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
