Nomination Process Update for Assam Assembly Elections

Following a statewide verification process, officials have confirmed that 776 nomination papers for 124 assembly seats in Assam have been deemed valid. According to the Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the evaluation of nomination papers for the remaining two seats, Barpeta and Dhekiajuli, has been postponed until Wednesday morning. The scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming 2026 general elections in the Assam Assembly has been conducted, with the review completed for 124 out of the 126 seats.


Postponement of Scrutiny for Remaining Seats

The examination of the 24 seats in Barpeta and 65 seats in Dhekiajuli has been delayed until 11 AM on March 25, 2026. Out of the total 815 candidates who submitted 1389 nominations for the Assam Assembly elections, 776 have been validated. The deadline for candidates to withdraw their nominations is set for March 26, 2026, at 3 PM. The nomination period for the assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry concluded on Monday, intensifying political activities in these states and union territories.


Gaurav Gogoi Files Nomination in Jorhat

In a significant move, Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, filed his nomination as the Indian National Congress candidate for the 100-number Jorhat assembly constituency, with the backing of alliance partners. He organized a grand rally with supporters at the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner's office to submit his nomination papers. Prior to this, Gogoi paid tribute to his father, the late Tarun Gogoi, a former Chief Minister of Assam, and his grandparents at his residence in Jorhat, reaffirming his commitment to follow their ideals and principles of public service. He also visited a Gurudwara, temple, naamghar, mosque, and church in Jorhat to promote messages of communal harmony, unity, and humanity.


Congress Faces Setbacks in Candidate Nominations

In a setback for the Congress party, a candidate's nomination from the Haflong assembly constituency was rejected during the scrutiny process, as reported by the Election Commission. According to the Commission's website, the nomination papers of Congress candidates Vidisha Neog from the Jalukbari constituency, represented by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Anand Narah from Dhakuakhana were rejected. However, one set of nomination papers for each candidate was accepted, allowing their candidacies to remain valid. Several other candidates also faced rejection of their nominations, with the final list to be announced after the completion of the scrutiny process on Tuesday. The reasons for the rejections were not specified on the Election Commission's website. Notably, the nomination of Congress leader Nirmal Langthasa from Haflong was rejected, while the nomination of Nandita Garolosa from the same seat was accepted.
