Public Support for BJP Alliance
Devajit Saikia, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), described the recent Assam Assembly election results as a testament to the public's confidence in the BJP-led coalition. He stated that the citizens of Assam have shown overwhelming support for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the NDA government.
Sarma's Second Term Inauguration
Himanta Biswa Sarma was officially sworn in for his second consecutive term as Chief Minister during a grand ceremony at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara. Saikia remarked on the sidelines of the event, emphasizing the significant backing from the people of Assam for Sarma and the NDA.
Notable Attendees at the Ceremony
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP President Nitin Nabin, along with various Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.
NDA's Political Strength in Assam
This victory marks the third consecutive term for the NDA government in Assam, highlighting the coalition's increasing political influence in the northeastern region.
Cabinet Appointments and Assembly Majority
Alongside Sarma, four other ministers took their oaths, including BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, as well as Atul Bora from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF). Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been nominated as the NDA candidate for the Speaker's position in the Assam Assembly.
The BJP-led NDA achieved a remarkable victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 126 seats, thus securing a three-fourths majority. The AGP and BPF each contributed 10 seats to this success.
Sarma also successfully retained his constituency with a margin exceeding 80,000 votes, reinforcing his position as the leading figure for the BJP in Assam. In his victory address, he attributed the state's rapid development over the last decade to the 'double-engine' government led by Prime Minister Modi.
