New Delhi, May 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President Nitin Nabin have expressed their support for the Assam Assembly's recent approval of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill.

Amit Shah emphasized that the UCC has been a fundamental goal for the BJP since its inception.

In a message on X, Shah congratulated the people of Assam for the Assembly's decision, stating, "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP-led state governments are implementing uniform laws for all citizens."

"I am thrilled that Assam has joined Uttarakhand and Gujarat in passing the UCC Bill today. I extend my congratulations to Chief Minister @himantabiswa Ji and all legislators who supported this initiative," he added.

Shah reiterated the party's commitment to ensuring equality before the law across the nation.

The Assam Assembly approved the UCC Bill on Wednesday, aiming to establish a unified legal framework governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships, regardless of religious affiliation, despite opposition calls for further review by a select committee.

With this legislation, Assam becomes the third state to enact a UCC Bill, following Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Goa also maintains a common civil law from its colonial past.

Nitin Nabin, the BJP National President, described the UCC Bill's passage as "historic," asserting that the state has shown a strong commitment to social harmony and equal justice for all.

"The BJP's policy has always been clear: 'Justice for all and appeasement of none,'" Nabin stated in a post on X.

He remarked, "The approval of the UCC Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly marks a crucial advancement towards equal rights and a standardized civil system nationwide."

Nabin commended the Assam government for this significant decision, attributing it to the guidance of Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

"Following the examples set by Uttarakhand and Gujarat, Assam has now enacted the Uniform Civil Code, showcasing its dedication to social harmony and equal justice for all citizens," he noted.

He concluded by stating, "Such visionary decisions are continually reinforcing the commitment to 'Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.'"
