Assam Aims for 3,500 MW Solar Energy by 2030

Ambitious Solar Energy Goals Set by Assam Chief Minister

On Thursday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, announced the state's ambitious target of generating 3,500 megawatts of solar energy by the year 2030.

During the inauguration of a 70-megawatt solar power plant in the Khudigaon area of Dhubri district, he emphasized the government's commitment to initiating development projects on encroachment-free government land, which will aid in job creation and boost the local economy.

After unveiling the solar park, Sarma shared on social media platform X, stating, 'Our solar capacity has now reached 680 megawatts, and we expect to touch 750 megawatts by April. We are steadily progressing towards a sustainable and clean energy future.'

He reiterated that Assam's solar energy target for 2030 stands at 3,500 megawatts. This new project has been jointly developed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL) and Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL).

SGEL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN Limited, a public sector Navratna company. According to the Chief Minister's office, this project, which has been developed at a cost exceeding ₹350 crores, is expected to generate 141 million units of electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 115,000 tons.

Following the inauguration, Sarma informed reporters that the government will only initiate development projects on land that has been freed from encroachment.

He added, 'Our goal is to clear government land of encroachments and commence projects on it. This will lead to job creation and enhance the local economy.'
