Ashwin Questions Vaibhav Surya's Batting Position in T20 Match
Concerns Over Batting Position
Christchurch - In the second T20 match between India and New Zealand, young batsman Vaibhav Surya was included in the playing eleven, but his batting position has raised eyebrows. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed concerns that the change in batting order hindered Surya's natural game. In this match held in Christchurch, Surya was sent to bat at number three in place of Ishan Kishan, where he managed only 4 runs off 8 balls before getting out, failing to capitalize on the opportunity.
Ashwin's Insights on Batting Challenges
During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted the difficulties of adapting to a new batting position, emphasizing the need for guidance from an experienced teammate in such situations. He stated, “It didn’t seem like Vaibhav was timing the ball well. At such critical moments, you need a senior player nearby to advise you to stay calm, hold your ground, and keep your eyes on the ball. I felt he was like a fish out of water, and batting in the sixth over was not easy for him.”
Suggestions for Team Management
Ashwin also provided a crucial suggestion to the team management. He recommended that if India wishes to continue with this combination, Vaibhav Surya should open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, while Sanju Samson should take on the responsibility of batting at number three.
India's Strong Performance Despite Early Wicket
Despite Surya's early dismissal, India's middle and lower-order batsmen delivered an impressive performance. Thanks to significant contributions from Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Naman Dheer, India successfully chased down New Zealand's target of 180 runs. With this victory, India has taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20 series, with the third match scheduled for October 27 in Wellington.
