Aiming for International Competitions

Indian Kabaddi sensation Ashu Malik has fully recovered from a significant injury and is now focused on upcoming international events, including the Asian Games, where he hopes to represent his country.

During the fourth day of the national training camp organized by the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) in Bellary, Malik shared insights about his recovery journey and future ambitions. This five-day camp, concluding on Thursday, has gathered a blend of seasoned players and emerging talents as India gears up for major international tournaments.

Chasing Dreams of Glory

At just 24, Malik, who captained Dabang Delhi to victory in the Pro Kabaddi League 2025, expressed that wearing the national jersey is the pinnacle of achievement for any athlete. He stated, "Representing India is a dream for every player. We are dedicated to securing medals at the highest level, whether at the Asian Games, World Cup, or other global competitions."

Fostering Young Talent

Originating from Sonepat, Haryana, Malik praised the AKFI for its efforts in developing young players, noting the inclusion of teenagers in the camp. He remarked, "Bringing in young athletes aged 18-19 helps them acclimate to the national camp environment and prepares them for future challenges."

He also highlighted the importance of a collaborative learning atmosphere within the team, recalling his own experiences. "In our youth, we admired players like Sandeep Narwal and Pardeep Narwal on television and aspired to play alongside them. Now, the younger generation looks up to us in the same way," he added.

Bouncing Back from Injury

Malik opened up about a recent injury he faced during the PKL season, where he sustained a tendon and ankle injury in a match against Haryana Steelers. Despite the discomfort, he continued to play with support taping before taking a three-month recovery period after the season. "It was challenging, but injuries are part of an athlete's journey. By the end of January, I was back to full fitness," he shared.

Celebrating Dabang Delhi's Success

Reflecting on Dabang Delhi's successful season, Malik emphasized the importance of teamwork over individual accolades. He acknowledged the contributions of experienced players like Surjeet Singh and Fazel Atrachali, as well as younger teammates such as Saurabh Nandal, Ajinkya Pawar, and Neeraj Narwal.

Aiming for Gold at the Asian Games

As the Asian Games approach, Malik's ambitions are clear: "Our goal is to secure gold for India. That's our target."

For Malik, the journey from being a fan of kabaddi heroes to becoming a celebrated player himself has come full circle, fueled by a renewed determination to stand on the podium for his nation.
