Aryna Sabalenka showcased her prowess at the US Open by defeating Jessica Pegula in straight sets, securing her spot in the finals for the fourth consecutive year. This victory keeps her hopes alive for a third consecutive title.

As reported on the WTA website, the top-seeded Sabalenka triumphed with scores of 7-5, 6-2 in just 80 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This win extends her lead over Pegula to 10-4 in their head-to-head matchups on the WTA Tour. Notably, this marks Sabalenka's third straight victory against Pegula at the US Open, where she delivered one of her strongest performances this season, setting up a final clash with Elena Rybakina.

A Strong Display from Sabalenka

In her post-match comments, Sabalenka expressed her determination, stating, "I was super desperate. I lost a tough match on grass against Jess, and I wasn't really performing well in the middle part of the season. This feels like a last push for the season regarding Grand Slams. I wanted to reach the final badly, and I was ready for whatever it took to win."

The first set was tightly contested, with both players holding serve until 5-5. Sabalenka then held serve and broke Pegula's serve, clinching the set 7-5.

In the second set, Sabalenka took control, breaking Pegula's serve early to lead 3-1. Pegula struggled with her second serve, winning only five out of 19 points, while Sabalenka faced just one break point throughout the match. She secured another break and finished the match with a score of 6-2.

Reactions After the Match

Reflecting on her performance, Sabalenka noted, "I played a lot of incredible matches at a really high level earlier this season. Today, I felt like every decision I made was the right one. Compared to our previous matches, I definitely played at a better level against Jess today."

Pegula acknowledged Sabalenka's exceptional performance despite her loss, stating, "That was definitely the best match she's played this year. Her level was incredibly high. I don't know what motivated her today, but she played at an insane level. Honestly, I don't think there was much I could do today."

Historic Achievement and Upcoming Final

With this victory, Sabalenka made history by becoming the first player in the Open Era to reach eight consecutive Grand Slam finals on hard courts, surpassing the previous record of seven held by legends like Steffi Graf and Novak Djokovic. She is also one of only six women in the Open Era to reach at least four consecutive US Open singles finals, joining the ranks of Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Graf, and Serena Williams.

Sabalenka's upcoming final will be her ninth Grand Slam title match, where she will face the newly crowned World No. 1, Rybakina. The two have previously met in two Major finals, with Sabalenka winning the 2023 Australian Open and Rybakina claiming victory in a three-set final earlier this year. Rybakina reached her first US Open final after overcoming Coco Gauff in the semifinals.
