Kejriwal's Allegations Against Meta
In light of a recent dispute between the Ministry of Electronics and IT and tech giant Meta, Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has made serious allegations against the company. The former Chief Minister of Delhi claimed on Thursday that Meta has placed restrictions on his social media account in India. Kejriwal expressed frustration over the lack of clear communication from Meta, despite his repeated attempts to seek clarification.
These claims emerged during an ongoing controversy regarding the removal of a video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kejriwal Shares Evidence on Social Media
Kejriwal took to X (formerly Twitter) to tag Meta India, sharing a screenshot of his restricted account. He criticized Meta's services as 'very poor' and urged the social media platform not to bow down to PM Modi and his administration. However, he did not specify whether it was his Instagram or Facebook account that faced restrictions.
Seeking Answers from Meta
He questioned, "Why have you restricted my account? Inquiries at your India office revealed that my account is restricted in India and is not accessible here. Why is that? No one at your office is providing any reasons or suggesting how these restrictions can be lifted. Despite numerous emails sent, I have only received routine acknowledgments without any substantial response."
Controversy Over PM Modi's Video Removal
The controversy escalated when Meta faced backlash from the central government for temporarily removing a Facebook post by PM Modi dated July 23. This incident prompted the company to issue an apology and clarify its actions. The government summoned senior Meta officials to inquire about their measures to prevent illegal content on their platform.
Meta later reinstated the post and acknowledged that 'significant funds were allocated to boost certain types of content.' According to government sources, the company admitted that its systems were not adequately equipped to handle the volume of illegal content.
Government's Concerns Regarding Meta
The government has raised concerns with Meta regarding content related to child sexual exploitation, deepfakes, the security of verified and prominent accounts, algorithmic bias, and compliance with Indian laws. Reports indicate that the company also acknowledged that 'paid promotions were made for specific audiences.' Further inquiries may be conducted with the company.
