Itanagar, Oct 31: Chowna Mein, the Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, has reaffirmed the State Government's commitment to engage in discussions with all stakeholders regarding the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP). He emphasized the need for addressing concerns and differing opinions through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.
During the silver jubilee celebration of the All Palin, Chambang, Yangte, Gangte, and Tarak-Lengdi Students’ Union in Palin, Mein expressed the Government's readiness to collaborate with various groups, including community organizations, student unions, civil society, and individuals who have raised concerns about the project.
He stressed that democratic disagreements should be resolved through conversation rather than conflict, advocating for an environment where all parties can voice their opinions and worries freely.
Mein also pointed out the significance of expert consultations and informed public discussions in tackling issues related to the mega dam project. He highlighted that technical evaluations and enhanced public awareness are crucial for ensuring that discussions are grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the project's impacts.
Reiterating the Government's willingness to engage, he assured that all interested organizations and individuals would have the chance to take part in the discussions.
The Deputy Chief Minister's comments come in light of ongoing concerns and tensions surrounding the proposed project in the Siang area.
Previously, the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum (AITF) formed a seven-member peace committee aimed at addressing the violence and unrest in the Siang region related to the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).
According to AITF general secretary Tapi Tai, the committee will facilitate communication between the State Government and the protesting factions, work to avert further violence and damage to both public and private properties, and propose measures to build confidence and restore peace in the area.
Additionally, the Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) has also offered to mediate discussions between the State Government and the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF) to help bring about peace in the region. The forum has urged the State Government to initiate peaceful negotiations with stakeholders regarding SUMP, offering to mediate initial talks between the Government and SIFF.
