Promoting Heritage Tourism in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar, Jan 3: The government of Arunachal Pradesh is making significant investments in heritage tourism, focusing on the development of World War II sites and trekking paths leading to aircraft crash locations throughout the state.

During a recent announcement, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein emphasized that the upcoming International Pangsau Pass Winter Festival will commemorate 80 years since World War II with a special Willy Jeep Rally from Pasighat to Pangsau Pass.

"New museums and tourism initiatives are being launched to honor the sacrifices made during the war and to ensure this vital part of history is preserved for future generations," Mein stated in a social media update.

These comments were made during his visit to the Hump World War II Museum in Pasighat, where he was joined by former chief minister Mukut Mithi and other legislators.

Mein praised Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng for his innovative approach in founding the museum.

The Deputy Chief Minister noted that the museum safeguards rare and significant artifacts, including remnants of aircraft that crashed during the war, serving as a poignant memorial for the families of fallen soldiers.

He also highlighted that many tribal individuals from Arunachal Pradesh played a crucial role during World War II, acting as porters and aiding in the construction of the historic Ledo Road.

To honor this heritage, a new World War II Museum is being built in Jairampur, and various war-related sites in the Changlang district are being transformed into tourist destinations.

These developments include trekking routes to aircraft crash sites and other historical locations, aimed at enhancing tourism while preserving the past.

"These initiatives pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during World War II and serve as a reminder of their invaluable contributions," he added.

Officials noted that the Hump World War II Museum in Pasighat stands as a significant testament to Arunachal Pradesh's vital role during the war.

Dedicated to maintaining wartime history, the museum features rare artifacts, photographs, and remnants of aircraft that met their fate in the region during the conflict.

It documents the strategic significance of the Hump air route and the Ledo Road while honoring the sacrifices of soldiers and the essential contributions of local tribal communities who served as porters and guides.

The museum provides visitors with a profound insight into a lesser-known historical narrative, while also serving as a memorial for the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war.
