Itanagar, Oct 14: Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh has tentatively accepted proposals aimed at decreasing the presence of security forces in the Siang Valley and retracting FIRs as part of confidence-building initiatives to promote discussions regarding the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).

Khandu made this announcement after a constructive meeting with representatives from the Adi Baane Kebang Youth Wing (ABKYW) and the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU), alongside Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, focusing on the path forward for broader consultations and meaningful discussions about the proposed project.

Following the meeting, Khandu shared on social media that he had received appeals from both organizations requesting a reduction in security forces and the withdrawal of FIRs.

“For dialogue to be effective, it must be built on trust and mutual understanding. We are dedicated to fostering dialogue, consent, and a positive way forward,” Khandu stated, confirming his agreement to the proposals as confidence-building measures to encourage discussions.

He expressed optimism that both organizations would collaborate to foster an environment of trust and dialogue in the Siang Valley.

The Chief Minister’s remarks indicate a move towards alleviating tensions and establishing a favorable environment for engaging stakeholders regarding the proposed project, which has faced opposition and concerns from segments of the local community.

The SUMP proposal and the ongoing Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) process have been pivotal topics in discussions within the Siang and Upper Siang districts, with local groups voicing concerns about the project and calling for more extensive consultations.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who was also part of the discussions, characterized the talks with ABKYW and AdiSU as productive, emphasizing the focus on advancing wider consultations and meaningful dialogue regarding the proposed PFR.
