Empowering Local Governance in Arunachal Pradesh


Itanagar, Jan 11: The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, has emphasized the significance of grassroots institutions such as panchayats in the process of nation-building. He expressed optimism that the newly elected panchayat leaders will commit themselves to fostering development and promoting inclusive growth throughout the state.


In a recent social media update, Khandu extended his congratulations to the newly inaugurated zilla parishad chairpersons (ZPCs) and gram panchayat chairpersons (GPCs) across Arunachal Pradesh.


“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 27 newly sworn-in zilla parishad chairpersons and 2,108 gram panchayat chairpersons throughout the state,” Khandu stated on social media.


He underscored the critical role of local self-governance, noting that these grassroots institutions have been "empowered to play a pivotal role in nation-building" under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


Khandu expressed confidence that the elected officials would approach their duties with dedication and a strong commitment to public service, thereby accelerating development and inclusive growth in their communities.


“Best wishes to all of you as you take on this vital responsibility of serving the people of Arunachal Pradesh,” the Chief Minister added.


The election results for the ZPCs and GPCs were finalized across all 27 districts on Saturday, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieving a significant victory.


The BJP claimed 25 out of the 27 ZPC positions, while the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) each secured one seat.


Among the ZPC positions, 11 are held by women. The panchayat elections took place on December 15 of the previous year.


In the gram panchayat elections, the ruling BJP won over 6,000 of the 8,208 available seats statewide.


In the elections for zilla parishad members, the party captured 170 out of 245 seats, including 44 that were won uncontested.
