Arshad Shaikh Set for Surgery Following Accident at Asian Para Games
Arshad Shaikh to Undergo Surgery After Accident
Indian para-cyclist Arshad Shaikh has been diagnosed with a displaced fracture in his left femur and is slated for surgery on Friday. Team India's chief physician, Dr. Ameya Kagali, confirmed that the athlete is currently stable after his accident during the Asian Para Games. Arshad, who is the sole para-cyclist representing India at the ongoing Games in Japan and is also preparing for the 2024 Paris Paralympics, fell during the men's time trial on Wednesday, landing on his previously operated left residual limb.
Medical Status and Recovery
The injury affects the upper section of the femur near the hip, necessitating surgical intervention. Arshad, who has an above-knee amputation on his left leg and uses a prosthesis, will require medical evaluation and rehabilitation post-surgery. Dr. Kagali mentioned that Arshad is in good spirits and his vital signs are stable ahead of the procedure.
"We have been with Arshad since last night and have maintained constant communication. He is currently in good spirits, although he is experiencing some pain, which is typical for a femur fracture. His vital signs are stable, and he is fit for surgery tomorrow. We are in regular contact with him and his attendant, Mr. Ramesh," he stated.
International Medical Response
Dr. Kagali commended the swift response of the local medical team following the incident, which took place at the Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka, over 250 km from Nagoya. "The Japanese medical staff has been exceptional in their response to any medical emergencies. In Arshad's case, it was no different. I believe three other athletes also fell during the event, and they have all received care at a top-tier tertiary care center," he noted.
He further explained that the Indian medical team had collaborated with Japanese surgeons to discuss the treatment plan and the seriousness of Arshad's injury. "We have thoroughly explained the nature of the injury to Arshad and outlined the steps leading up to the surgery. He will remain in the Japanese hospital for approximately 10 days to two weeks, after which he will be advised on his fitness to travel," he added.
Arshad's injury has highlighted India's representation in para-cycling at the Games, as he is the only cyclist cleared to compete in Aichi-Nagoya. His surgery is set for Friday, and his recovery and travel readiness will be evaluated by his medical team.
