Arrest Made in Hit-and-Run Case of Marathon Runner Fauja Singh

Tragic Incident Claims Life of Fauja Singh
On Wednesday, Punjab Police apprehended a non-resident Indian in connection with the hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of marathon runner Fauja Singh earlier this week, according to reports from a local news outlet.
The unfortunate event occurred on Monday in Beas village, Jalandhar district, leading to the passing of the 114-year-old Singh.
Born in Beas in 1911, Singh moved to England in 1993 and made history as the world’s oldest marathon runner in 2011.
Harvinder Singh Virk, the senior superintendent of police in Jalandhar, identified the suspect as 30-year-old Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur who had recently returned from Canada.
Evidence from the scene, including fragments of the vehicle's headlight, helped authorities trace Dhillon.
A first information report has been filed against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, addressing charges of reckless driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over Singh's passing on social media, stating, “Fauja Singh ji was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness. He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away.”
