Kolkata, October 31: Authorities in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district have apprehended a man in his forties, accused of sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl, as reported by police on Saturday.
The suspect, named Arjun Sardar, allegedly took the child to the rooftop of a neighboring residence while visiting a relative in Dattapukur, where the assault occurred.
This incident reportedly took place on Thursday and was uncovered the following day, leading to heightened tensions in the community.
According to police reports, the victim's family has been residing in a rented accommodation in Subhashnagar, under the jurisdiction of the Nilganj outpost, for the past three months.
Local residents attempted to file a complaint at the Nilganj outpost of the Dattapukur police station, but their initial efforts were met with resistance. Eventually, a case was filed against the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, prompting an investigation. The suspect was arrested on Friday night.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime. He was subsequently presented before the Barasat court on Saturday, where police requested custody for further inquiry.
The child was taken to Barasat Medical College and Hospital for a medical examination. However, her family and local residents expressed frustration over the lengthy wait, citing a shortage of available female doctors at the facility.
Protests erupted at the hospital due to the delays in the girl's medical examination, which lasted several hours. The situation was eventually managed, but the victim's family is calling for severe punishment for the perpetrator.
