APL Standings at the Midpoint

As the Archery Premier League (APL) reaches its halfway point, the competition remains intense. Mighty Marathas and Kakatiya Knights both secured victories against Chero Archers and Prithviraaj Yodhas, respectively, preventing their rivals from gaining a significant lead in the standings.

In the second match on Monday, the Rajputana Royals broke their losing streak, leaving the Chola Chiefs at the bottom of the table. Both Chero and Yodhas had chances to reach 8 points but their losses mean that four teams are now tied at 6 points after five matches. The Royals, with two wins, are close behind with four points, while the Chiefs have struggled, managing only one win in the season's first half.

The APL, the world's inaugural franchise-based archery league, is organized by the Archery Association of India and features six teams with a total of 48 archers, including 36 from India and 12 international stars. The league is being held at People's Plaza in Hyderabad and will conclude with a grand finale on October 18, showcasing the top four teams.

Marathas Triumph Over Chero in Exciting Showdown

The standout match of the day featured Chero facing off against the revitalized Marathas, culminating in a dramatic shootoff. Despite trailing for much of the match, the Mighty Marathas rallied to secure a thrilling victory against the strong Chero team. Aman Saini and Dhiraj Bommadevara hit their targets in the shootoff, while Chero's Mathias Fullerton managed a hit, but the other three archers missed, resulting in a 2-1 win for the Marathas after a 4-4 tie in regulation.

Chero began the match strongly, winning the first set, but the high-quality archery continued with both teams splitting the second and third sets. The fourth set was closely contested, leading to a shootoff after a tense final score check. The Mighty Marathas, having started the season with two losses, have now achieved three consecutive wins, tying with Chero at six points. Yashdeep Bhoge replaced the in-form Atanu Das for Chero and performed well, but it was Saini who shone, finishing with a perfect score of 60 out of 60.

Royals Secure Victory Against Chiefs

In the second match, the Chola Chiefs faced difficulties from the outset. Despite bringing in their star recurve archers Deepika Kumari and Marcus D’Almeida for the third set, they succumbed to a 1-5 defeat against the Royals. The Chiefs struggled in the first two sets, scoring 63 and 69, respectively. Although the third set showed improvement with Kumari and D’Almeida, Mete Gazoz's final arrow secured an easy win for the defending champions.

Knights Halt Yodhas' Pursuit of Top Position

The final match of the day presented an opportunity for Yodhas to take the lead in the league. However, the Knights, bolstered by the return of Austrian star Nico Wiener, quickly established a 4-0 lead. Despite Jyothi Surekha Vennam's off day, Wiener and his teammates managed to secure a 6-2 victory, even as Yodhas attempted a comeback in the third set.

Looking Ahead: Upcoming Matches

The second half of the league phase kicks off on Tuesday, intensifying the race for the semifinals. The first match will see the in-form Chero Archers take on the defending champions Rajputana Royals in what promises to be an exciting contest. Following that, Prithviraaj Yodhas and Mighty Marathas will aim to strengthen their standings, while the day will conclude with a Southern Derby featuring Kakatiya Knights against Chola Chiefs.
