Kerala Congress Leader Claims Ministerial Entitlement

Apu John Joseph, a prominent figure in the Kerala Congress (Joseph) and the elected representative from Thodupuzha, asserted on Saturday that following their party's impressive victory in seven out of eight assembly seats during the Kerala elections, they are entitled to two ministerial positions in the new United Democratic Front (UDF) government. Speaking to reporters in Idukki, Joseph emphasized that the party made sacrifices for the broader interests of the UDF coalition and achieved remarkable results in the elections. He noted that while they previously contested ten seats, this time they relinquished two for the benefit of the UDF. With victories in seven of the eight seats they contested, he believes it is only natural for them to claim two ministerial roles.

Party's Historical Context and Future Aspirations

Joseph further elaborated that the party's decision to demand these positions stems from their historical presence of having two ministers and a chief minister. He highlighted that their party is fundamentally a farmers' party, dedicated to safeguarding their rights. These statements come amid ongoing discussions regarding cabinet formation and the selection of the next chief minister following the decisive victory of the UDF led by Congress in the Kerala assembly elections. Joseph mentioned that a final decision on ministerial positions would be made only after the chief minister's role is resolved, assuring that the party will make the right choices at the appropriate time.

Welcoming New Political Alliances

He also indicated that leaders and activists from other political parties interested in merging with the UDF would be welcomed, although the final decision rests with the party leadership. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader P.J. Kurien commented on the ongoing discussions about leadership and cabinet formation, stating that the Congress party is well-equipped to handle any political situation, including by-elections. Responding to inquiries about potential candidates for the chief minister position in Pathanamthitta, Kurien remarked, "The Congress has the capacity to face not just one, but multiple by-elections. The opinions of elected representatives reflect public sentiment."
