Anil Ambani Faces CBI Interrogation Over Alleged ₹2,929 Crore Fraud Case
CBI Questions Anil Ambani in Cheating Case
New Delhi: On Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated businessman Anil Ambani regarding a purported cheating case involving ₹2,929 crore linked to Reliance Communications Ltd, following a complaint from the State Bank of India (SBI), as reported by officials.
Ambani arrived at the CBI headquarters early in the day to participate in the questioning.
The agency has raised concerns about the misappropriation of funds, diversion of resources, and other irregularities related to the loans provided to the company by the bank.
A spokesperson for Ambani stated that he would be appearing before the CBI in Delhi on March 19 and 20 for inquiries related to the FIR stemming from SBI's complaint.
"This appearance reflects Mr. Ambani's commitment to fully cooperate with all investigative agencies," the spokesperson added.
The CBI had initiated action against Ambani in August of the previous year, accusing him of defrauding SBI of ₹2,929.05 crore.
As per the SBI's complaint, which is now part of the FIR, the company had outstanding debts exceeding ₹40,000 crore to various lenders, with SBI alone facing a loss of ₹2,929.05 crore based on 2018 data.
The agency has charged Ambani and Reliance Communications with offenses including criminal conspiracy, cheating, and criminal breach of trust.
"The accused allegedly misrepresented facts to secure credit facilities from SBI for Reliance Communications Ltd," a CBI spokesperson stated last August.
"Anil D Ambani refutes all allegations and intends to defend himself vigorously," the spokesperson remarked.
Sources indicate that the agency also conducted a search at Ambani's residence, 'Sea Wind', located in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai.
The SBI complaint pertains to issues that date back over a decade, according to the spokesperson.
At that time, Ambani was a non-executive director of the company and was not involved in daily operations, as stated.
"The case is currently sub-judice, pending before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and other judicial bodies, including the Supreme Court, for the past six years," the statement noted.
Ambani has formally challenged SBI's claims in the appropriate judicial forum.
