Angelo Mathews Bids Farewell to Test Cricket with Unique Records

A Historic Farewell at Galle
After 16 years since his Test debut at Galle International Stadium, Angelo Mathews returned to the same venue to play his final match in the format, concluding a remarkable red-ball career that has significantly influenced Sri Lankan cricket over the past decade. At 38 years old, Mathews, one of the nation's most accomplished Test batsmen, announced his retirement from Test cricket prior to the ongoing match against Bangladesh, prompting heartfelt tributes from teammates and fans alike.
A Unique Achievement
Mathews holds a distinctive record as the only active cricketer globally to have been dismissed after scoring both 99 and 199 runs in Test matches. In 2009, he fell short of a century against India in Mumbai, getting out at 99 runs. Years later, in 2022, he faced Bangladesh in Chattogram and was dismissed at 199 runs, just one run shy of a double century. This unusual record highlights both his skill and the unfortunate circumstances he faced throughout his career.
Impressive Test Career Stats
With 118 Tests under his belt, Mathews ranks as the third-highest run-scorer in Sri Lankan Test history, following legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. He amassed a total of 8,167 runs, boasting an impressive average of 44.62, including 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries, showcasing his consistency and resilience. Mathews is also among the select few Sri Lankan players to have participated in over 100 Test matches, joining the ranks of notable players like Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Dimuth Karunaratne.
