Chief Minister Launches Statewide Water Grid Plan

On Monday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu introduced an extensive plan aimed at establishing a statewide water grid. This initiative is designed to transform irrigation practices and ensure water security across the state. Speaking at the Jaladhara program in Anantapur, the Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to completing the Polavaram project before the Godavari Pushkaralu in 2027. Once finished, this project will enable the diversion of water from the Godavari River to the Krishna River using a gravity-based system, which will help stabilize the Krishna delta and facilitate water supply to Visakhapatnam.

Strategic Water Management Plans

As part of this comprehensive strategy, Naidu proposed redirecting approximately 200 TMC of Godavari water towards the Nagarjuna Sagar irrigation area. This water will then flow through projects like Nallamalla Sagar and Velugonda, allowing the water from the Krishna River to be reserved for the Rayalaseema region. This initiative aims to enable irrigation for every acre in drought-affected areas. The Chief Minister also outlined a long-term strategy for interlinking rivers in Andhra Pradesh, which will channel excess floodwater from Srikakulam to drought-prone regions like Anantapur.

Focus on Key Irrigation Projects

Naidu highlighted the importance of completing major projects such as Vamsadhara, Nagavali, and Champavati, noting that approval has been granted for a new barrage on the Vamsadhara River. Additionally, he assured that pending irrigation projects like the Varikapudisela in Palnadu and the Chintalapudi lift irrigation scheme in Eluru would be expedited to benefit drought-stricken areas like Prakasam and Markapur. The Chief Minister stated that the integrated water grid would bring about a revolutionary change, ensuring equitable water distribution in Andhra Pradesh and boosting agricultural productivity.
