Historic Achievement by Ancy Sojan

Ancy Sojan has made headlines by breaking the long-standing long jump record previously held by Anju Bobby George. During the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneshwar, she dedicated her gold medal performance to her father, who had always wished for a family member to hold a national record.

At 25 years old, Sojan achieved a remarkable jump of 6.88 meters, surpassing Anju's record of 6.83 meters set during the 2004 Athens Olympics.

'A Precious Gift to My Father': Sojan's Dedication

In a statement released by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Sojan expressed that her initial aim was to exceed her personal best of 6.75 meters, which she recorded four weeks prior. "My goal today was to surpass my personal best of 6.75m from Ranchi," she shared with excitement.

Her journey to the record began with a jump of 6.73 meters, followed by a no mark on her second attempt. She then recorded jumps of 6.67m, 6.72m, and finally, the record-breaking leap of 6.88m. Her last jump measured 6.69m.

Sojan emphasized the significance of her achievement, stating, "He wanted someone in the family to be a national record holder. This gold medal will be a cherished gift for him."

Overcoming Challenges

Last year, Sojan faced health challenges that required her to take a break from the sport. "It was a tough period both mentally and physically. I’m thrilled to have made a comeback just before the Aichi Nagoya Asian Games starting September 19," she remarked.
