Anand Sharma's Reflections on Political Integrity
Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Anand Sharma expressed on Thursday that maintaining self-respect in politics comes at a high cost, and speaking the truth is now perceived as a crime. This statement was made following the party's nomination of Anurag Sharma, the Kangra Congress Committee president, for the Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh. Before departing for Delhi, Sharma spoke with a news agency in Shimla, stating that he has no comments regarding why he was not selected as the party's candidate.
Sharma remarked, 'I wouldn't say I am disappointed, but I will say this: self-respect in politics is very expensive. One has to pay the price, and speaking the truth is now considered a crime.' Referring to the party leadership's decision, he noted that only those who made the decision can provide answers. He added that only they can explain why he was not sent and why the candidacy was withdrawn at the last moment. 'I have no possibility of commenting on this,' he stated.
Sharma further mentioned that he is not afraid of what has transpired. The decision-makers hold the ultimate authority. Perhaps they made this choice based on their foresight, and they can clarify its pros and cons. 'I cannot comprehend what has happened,' he said. When asked if this decision was made at the recommendation of the party leadership, Sharma expressed that it has been an honor for him to represent Himachal Pradesh and the nation over the years.
He added, 'It has been a privilege to represent the state and the country. Many institutions in Shimla and Himachal Pradesh, including Kangra and Mandi, have stood the test of time. This will remain memorable for the people of Himachal.' Sharma emphasized his deep personal connection to the state, stating that he will continue to visit. 'This is my home. I come here often. My ancestral home is here, and I will keep coming back. I will always stand with the people of Himachal,' he concluded.
