Analilia Mejia Triumphs in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District Special Election
Mejia's Victory in the Special Election
On April 16, Analilia Mejia, a progressive Democrat, secured a significant victory in the special election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway with approximately 59.5% of the votes compared to Hathaway's 40%. An independent candidate, Alan Bond, garnered less than 1% of the votes. This election was necessitated by the resignation of Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who left her position to become the governor of New Jersey in November 2025. Mejia is set to head to Washington immediately to complete the remaining term. Despite her win, Republicans maintain a slim majority in the House.
The district has a strong Democratic leaning, making the outcome somewhat expected. However, it highlights the potential for progressive candidates to succeed in such areas. Amy Funck, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, noted that while progressives have effectively mobilized primary voters, Democrats must refine their messaging to counter President Trump in the upcoming 2026 midterms. She remarked, “Democrats have some advantages due to the economy and the backlash against Trump’s actions, but internal divisions remain a vulnerability. To reclaim the House, they must first unify internally.”
Mejia received 77,620 votes, while Hathaway secured 52,122. She won the Democratic nomination in February after a competitive primary, during which AIPAC heavily funded efforts against her main moderate opponent, former Rep. Tom Malinowski. Mejia's campaign was bolstered by significant fundraising and endorsements from prominent progressive figures such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
At her victory celebration at the Montclair Art Museum, Mejia emphasized that advocating for improved healthcare in the wealthiest nation is not radical. She also criticized Hathaway, Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and Jeff Bezos, labeling them as the true radicals who undermine the constitution without facing repercussions.
Hathaway, a council member from Randolph, expressed pride in his campaign and affirmed his commitment to continue his efforts, stating, “Our work is only just beginning.” Mejia will serve in Congress for the next eight months but will need to run again soon for a full term, facing another primary in June, which presents Republicans with another opportunity to contest the seat.
In the interim, Mejia has stated that her primary focus will be to utilize all available resources in Congress to hold the Trump administration accountable and combat what she describes as democratic erosion. Analysts suggest that her unique blend of activist roots and practical leadership experience in government and nonprofits could position her as a pragmatic voice among progressives, rather than merely an outsider.
