Anahat Singh's Historic Win Fuels Ambitions for Asian Games and Olympics
Anahat Singh's Triumph at World Junior Championships
Indian squash sensation Anahat Singh, aged 18, recently celebrated a significant victory by becoming the first Indian woman to clinch the singles title at the World Junior Squash Championships held in Canada. This achievement has instilled a sense of confidence in her as she prepares for the upcoming Asian Games 2026.
Confidence Boost for Asian Games
During a recent felicitation event organized by the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), Anahat expressed that her success at the World Junior Championships has provided her with a confidence boost. However, she acknowledged the distinct challenges posed by the Asian Games, stating, "While this victory adds some confidence, the players and format are entirely different. Winning this event has given me a bit more assurance, but I know I face tough competition ahead."
Pursuing Olympic Dreams
With squash set to debut in the Olympics, Anahat remains focused and unfazed by the expectations surrounding her as a potential medal contender. She emphasized the importance of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, viewing the Asian Games as a crucial milestone in her journey. "I prefer to take it one tournament at a time, concentrating on significant events like the World Championships and PSA circuit competitions. Each tournament and training session contributes to my long-term Olympic aspirations," she remarked.
Inspiring Future Generations
Anahat expressed pride in being the first Indian to achieve this milestone, hoping it inspires others to pursue squash professionally. "This tournament will continue to exist, and I hope many more Indians will win it in the future," she added.
Olympic Inclusion a 'Huge Deal'
Anahat believes that squash's inclusion in the Olympics will motivate more individuals to engage in the sport, as the Games provide a larger platform for athletes. She shared, "The Olympics is a significant event for every athlete, and knowing that squash is part of it has driven me to train harder and focus more on my sport. I hope this inspires more young players to take up squash."
A Mother's Perspective
Tani Singh, Anahat's mother, discussed the challenges her daughter faces in balancing academics, squash commitments, and travel. She mentioned that the family strives to ensure Anahat has time for friends and family, although maintaining this balance can be challenging. "We do our best to allow her to enjoy life outside of squash, but it can be tough at times," she noted.
Nurturing Passion
Tani encouraged parents to support their children's passions, emphasizing that Anahat's love for sports has been a driving force in her success. "Children are more inclined to work hard when they enjoy what they do. We should nurture their interests rather than impose something they don't like," she advised.
