Amit Shah's Visit to Poonch
On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah traveled to Poonch to meet families impacted by recent shelling from Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior officials, Shah aimed to express condolences and provide financial assistance to those affected. He remarked that on the night of May 7, Indian forces successfully targeted terrorist bases in Pakistan and POK, delivering a decisive response on behalf of millions of Indians.
Shah further stated that hundreds of terrorists were neutralized during this operation. While India launched an offensive against the terrorists, Pakistan perceived it as an attack on itself, revealing its role in harboring terrorists. He noted that Pakistan targeted residential areas in Jammu and Kashmir, with Poonch suffering the most damage. This marked the first instance of firing in Poonch since independence. The global community has condemned Pakistan's aggression, and Indian armed forces retaliated by destroying nine of Pakistan's airbases, compelling them to seek a ceasefire.
Amit Shah emphasized that India will not tolerate any attacks on innocent civilians or its armed forces, promising precise retaliation for every assault. He praised the bravery of the people of Poonch and reiterated that responding to terrorist attacks is a core policy. He assured that development in Jammu and Kashmir will continue unabated. Between May 7 and May 10, Poonch witnessed the highest civilian casualties, with 14 out of 28 fatalities occurring in this district.
Shah's visit aimed to express solidarity with grieving families and reassure them of the central government's ongoing support. Operation Sindoor was initiated in early May in response to escalating ceasefire violations, drone intrusions, and targeted attacks on civilians from across the Line of Control. Since the operation commenced, military presence and surveillance have been intensified in border districts like Poonch and Rajouri.
