Inauguration of the Jayaprakash Narayan Library
On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the advanced 'Jayaprakash Narayan Library' in the national capital. He emphasized that a nation's true progress is measured not just by its economic statistics but also by its intellectual depth. Addressing the attendees, Shah described the launch of this library as a significant milestone in Delhi's socio-educational landscape. This new multimedia and digital facility is dedicated to the legacy of the great freedom fighter, thinker, and social reformer, Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan.
Shah remarked that today marks an important day for Delhi, as a library named after the esteemed freedom fighter and thinker Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan has been inaugurated. Constructed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), this multi-story building integrates traditional learning with digital resources. It provides users access to physical books as well as over five lakh e-books and a digital catalog. Highlighting the fundamental connection between reading spaces and nation-building, the Home Minister shared his extensive thoughts on measuring the country's genuine progress.
He quoted a great thinker who stated that a country's future cannot be gauged by the richness of its agriculture, the fullness of its markets, or the number of industries established, but rather by the crowds in its libraries and the number of youth present there. The library boasts an impressive collection of over 32,000 books across two floors, with special arrangements made for students and researchers. Additionally, a modern reading area has been created to allow students, researchers, and readers to study and gain knowledge in a peaceful environment.
To illustrate how administrative measures can revive reading habits, Shah referenced a successful 'hub-and-spoke' initiative implemented in his parliamentary constituency of Gandhinagar, aimed at making literature accessible to rural youth.
The Home Minister explained that a small experiment was conducted in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, where libraries were opened in every village, each housing 3,000 to 4,000 books. These libraries were connected to a larger library with millions of books. Four mobile vans were also deployed. Now, if a child in the village requests a book from their local library, it is made available to them every Friday in their village. Furthermore, each library was linked to a school.
