Amit Shah Criticizes Rahul Gandhi During Assam Visit

Amit Shah's Strong Remarks on Opposition

During his visit to Assam on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a fierce attack on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and the tactics of opposition politics. Shah accused Gandhi and his party of tarnishing India's image on international platforms in an attempt to undermine Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This criticism was directed at Gandhi's behavior during the AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi, particularly regarding the Indian Youth Congress's 'shirtless protest' and Gandhi's actions on the steps of Parliament.

Disrespecting the Temple of Democracy

Shah expressed strong disapproval of Rahul Gandhi's protest methods on the Parliament steps, stating, "Parliament is a sacred temple of democracy. Rahul Gandhi was sitting on the steps eating 'chai and pakoras.' Does he not know where to have breakfast? We too have been in opposition and protested, but there is a proper platform and decorum for that." He further claimed that performing without clothes at global events like the AI Summit is a direct conspiracy to tarnish the country's reputation, which the people of India will never forgive.

Critique of Congress's Governance in Assam

Shah also criticized the Congress party's past governance in Assam, particularly in the health sector. He alleged that a decade ago, the state's healthcare system was in dire straits and claimed that previous Congress administrations prioritized the financial well-being of political families over public welfare. He accused Congress of misappropriating ₹150 crores annually from the state's health budget during their 15 years in power.

Praise for Assam's Current Health Initiatives

Highlighting the BJP's focus on accessible healthcare, Shah commended the current government for its commitment to providing affordable health services to all societal segments. He praised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for rapidly strengthening Assam's healthcare infrastructure.

Inauguration of Major Health Projects

During the event, Shah inaugurated the ₹675 crore Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in Guwahati. He also virtually inaugurated two cancer centers in Golaghat and Tinsukia under the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), which cost ₹135 crores to establish. Additionally, he laid the virtual foundation for super-specialty hospitals at Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital (₹220 crores), Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (₹310 crores), and Barpeta Medical College and Hospital (₹284 crores). He also laid the foundation for a ₹218 crore 'Health Building' and a ₹115 crore 'Abhayapuri District Hospital' in Guwahati.

Political Significance of Shah's Visit

Shah arrived in Assam on Saturday for a two-day visit, where he held closed-door meetings with senior BJP leaders regarding organizational and election-related matters. Meanwhile, the Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for upcoming assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry later today, adding political significance to Shah's comments in Guwahati.
