Guwahati, Apr 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah ramped up the campaign for the BJP-led coalition in Assam by addressing a rally in Kaliabor, where he endorsed Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate and current minister Keshab Mahanta ahead of the Assembly elections set for April 9.
This marks Shah's second visit to Assam within just four days, showcasing the BJP's vigorous campaign approach as the election date approaches.
During his speech, Shah criticized the Congress party, asserting that it failed to foster development during its 15 years in power in Assam, particularly in crucial areas like environmental protection.
He pointed out that encroachments during the Congress administration had detrimental effects on Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its one-horned rhinoceros.
“Kaziranga’s one-horned rhinoceros draws tourists globally. It was the NDA government that took action against encroachers and revitalized Kaziranga’s international tourism appeal,” Shah stated.
Shah also took a jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is campaigning in the state, questioning the party's record on development and contrasting financial support received under various governments.
He noted that Assam received Rs 1.28 lakh crore during the Congress-led government, while under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state has benefited from Rs 9.88 lakh crore in the last decade.
Addressing the issue of encroachment, Shah remarked that the Opposition often misrepresents actions against “infiltrators” as faith-based politics.
“The BJP opposes infiltrators, not the indigenous Muslim population in Assam,” he clarified.
Shah emphasized the improved law and order situation in the state, which was once plagued by violence and insurgency, noting that over 10,000 youths have integrated into the mainstream in recent years.
He also highlighted the BJP's alliance with the AGP, calling it a robust and lasting partnership.
With elections scheduled for April 9 across all 126 Assembly constituencies and counting on May 4, the political landscape in Assam is entering its most intense phase.
