Amit Mishra's Retirement and IPL Contributions
New Delhi [India]: Veteran spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement from professional cricket on Thursday, concluding a remarkable 25-year career. He shared insights on how the Indian Premier League (IPL) significantly aided his financial stability and served as a crucial platform for his return to the sport.
Mishra noted, "The IPL was instrumental for me financially. Additionally, it provided a vital platform for my comeback. After a five-year hiatus, I was picked for the IPL, as leg spinners were often overlooked in T20 formats. Virender Sehwag reached out to me, expressing his desire to have me on his team due to my previous T20 performances."
Mishra first made his mark on the international stage in 2003, debuting in an ODI against South Africa during the TVS Cup. His initial outing was modest, where he bowled five overs, taking one wicket for 29 runs.
After his debut, Mishra faced a challenging period of nearly five years without international appearances, overshadowed by the dominance of Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble.
During this time, he dedicated himself to domestic cricket in Haryana, striving to impress selectors despite the lack of faith from those around him.
He made his IPL debut in 2008 with the Delhi Daredevils, under the captaincy of Sehwag. Mishra leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the IPL, having taken 174 wickets in 162 matches, ranking as the seventh-highest wicket-taker with an average of 23.82 and an economy rate of 7.37.
Notably, he is the only bowler in IPL history to achieve three hat-tricks for three different franchises: Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Kings XI Punjab in 2011, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.
Mishra expressed disappointment that the value of leg spinners as wicket-takers was recognized only later in the game, citing legends like Shane Warne and Anil Kumble as prime examples.
"I took a hat-trick and five wickets, which led to my return to the Indian team, where I performed well in T20. It saddens me that the importance of leg spinners as wicket-takers was acknowledged so late; just look at Shane Warne and Anil Bhai," he remarked.
In total, Mishra represented India in 68 matches across all formats, claiming 156 wickets.
