Alzarri Joseph Opts Out of West Indies Test Series Against Pakistan
Joseph's Withdrawal from the Squad
Daren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies cricket team, has announced that fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has chosen not to participate in the upcoming two-match ICC World Test Championship series against Pakistan. Sammy described this decision as a considerable loss for the team as they prepare for their home matches.
Initially, Cricket West Indies had indicated that Joseph was unavailable due to 'personal reasons' when they announced the 15-member squad. However, during a press conference, Sammy clarified that the 29-year-old had opted out after being selected.
"It's a significant loss. Mr. Joseph has declined selection, and that's the reality we face," Sammy stated. He noted that Joseph had recently returned from injury and had been selected for the series, but ultimately decided against participating.
Joseph's Recent Performance
Despite his decision to withdraw, Joseph had recently made a comeback after an injury layoff. He played in both Tests against Sri Lanka in June and July, taking six wickets in total. Additionally, he showcased his skills with a match-winning performance of 4 for 41 in the first ODI against New Zealand during a five-match series.
Changes to the Squad
Joseph's absence has led to adjustments in the West Indies squad. Left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop has received his first Test call-up following impressive performances in domestic cricket. Top-order batsman Kirk McKenzie is also back in the squad after notable displays for Jamaica in first-class matches.
Bishop boasts an impressive first-class record, having taken 119 wickets in just 25 matches at an average of 23.90. He has been the leading wicket-taker in the last three editions of the West Indies Championship, with 91 wickets to his name during that time.
Fast bowler Anderson Phillip, who played in the last Test against Sri Lanka, has been omitted from the squad. Roston Chase will continue as captain, with Jomel Warrican serving as vice-captain.
Sammy's Confidence in the Bowling Attack
Even without one of his top fast bowlers, Sammy expressed confidence in his team's bowling lineup against Pakistan. "I can assure you that we have a bowling attack capable of taking 20 wickets, which is crucial for winning Test matches," he remarked.
He highlighted the team's previous performances against New Zealand and Australia, where they matched their opponents with the ball. Sammy noted the consistency shown by the batters in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, which he believes will contribute positively.
He added, "As long as our batsmen can score runs, we know our bowling lineup can secure 20 wickets and help us win Test matches."
The pace attack for the series will be led by Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, and Jayden Seales, with all-rounders Justin Greaves and Keemo Paul providing additional seam options. The spin department will include Warrican, debutant Bishop, and captain Chase.
Upcoming Matches
The first Test is set to commence on Saturday in Trinidad, followed by the second Test in Port of Spain starting August 2.
