Pipers Hold Top Position Amid Mixed Results

The defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers, managed to secure the leading position in the standings, even after suffering a defeat in one of their two matches on Monday. Meanwhile, both CheQ Mumba Masters and PBG Alaskan Knights showcased impressive performances on the third day of the Global Chess League (GCL) held in Bengaluru.


Pipers' Resilience Shines Through

In their first match of the day, Alpine APL Pipers, playing with white pieces, faced a setback, losing 7-9 to PBG Alaskan Knights. However, they quickly rebounded with a commanding 15-3 victory over FYERS American Gambits, allowing them to ascend to the top of the leaderboard with three match wins.


In another match, Mumba Masters achieved a convincing 12-3 victory against Ganges Grandmasters, propelling them to the second position.


Pipers Achieve Record Margin Victory

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Pipers' remarkable comeback, which resulted in the largest victory margin of Season 4. Key players Vidit Gujrathi and Koneru Humpy excelled, each securing their third win in four matches. Vidit skillfully overcame Daniil Dubov despite facing time pressure, while Humpy triumphed over Sara Khadem in just 29 moves. Additionally, Volodar Murzin showcased his talent by defeating Marc’andria Maurizzi, contributing to the team's success.


Reflecting on his performance, Player of the Match Vidit stated, "The morning game was balanced, but I faced time pressure. I felt pressure in the second game, but I’m pleased with my win."
