Overview of the Allegations
Just two months after taking office, a purported plot to destabilize the government in Tamil Nadu has come to light. This revelation emerged on Wednesday with the arrest of three suspects. Allegations suggest that leaders from the DMK offered 35 crore rupees to TVK legislators to vote in favor of a no-confidence motion against Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar. The conspiracy was brought to attention when TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja claimed he was approached with an offer to support the motion against the Speaker. Following this, the police expanded their investigation, which has now implicated former DMK minister V. Senthil Balaji and his brother V. Ashok Kumar.
What Triggered the Investigation?
Initiation of the Controversy
The controversy began when Elaiyaraja filed a complaint with the Chennai police on June 29. According to his complaint, a person named Thirunavukkarasu contacted him, claiming to be the head of an opinion polling agency called 'Indian Political Democratic Strategies' (IPDS). He allegedly informed the MLA that he was speaking on behalf of members of a major political party. Elaiyaraja accused the caller of stating that a motion against the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker would soon be introduced and urged him to vote in favor of it, despite being a member of the ruling TVK. In return, the caller purportedly offered him up to 35 crore rupees. The MLA claimed he rejected the proposal and told the caller not to contact him again. However, he alleged that he was subsequently threatened and warned not to disclose the conversation; the caller reportedly stated that if he spoke about it, he and his family would face consequences.
