Allegations of Mental Harassment in Indian Athletics: Sumit Antil's Complaint Against Coach Naval Singh
Investigation into Allegations of Abuse
Adille Sumariwala, the vice-president of World Athletics, stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted regarding the complaint made by two-time Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil against his coach, Naval Singh, for alleged mental harassment and the use of offensive language.
Antil has accused Singh of serious mental harassment and frequent verbal abuse, with support from Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra for the complaint submitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). A source confirmed that SAI has acknowledged the complaint and is addressing the issue with the relevant federation. During a press conference held by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Sumariwala commented on the situation.
SAI's Clarification on Coach's Employment Status
SAI has clarified that Naval Singh is not an employee of theirs but is currently working with the Athletics Federation of India as part of the National Coaching Camp.
"We have received a complaint from Paralympic Gold Medalist Sumit Antil regarding verbal abuse by Coach Naval Singh. This complaint is supported by other athletes, including Neeraj Chopra," stated a source from SAI.
"The coach in question is not affiliated with SAI and is training another prominent athlete under the National Coaching Camp organized by AFI. The complaint has been formally lodged, and the federation is addressing the matter accordingly," the source added.
Vinesh Phogat Voices Concerns
Prominent Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has also condemned the alleged mental harassment faced by Sumit Antil from coach Naval Singh, expressing her dismay over the disrespect shown to medal-winning athletes while those in power remain unresponsive.
In a post on X, Phogat remarked, "The dignity of those who bring medals for the country will be trampled every time, and the responsible people will remain silent as always. This is the new India, isn't it?"
