Allegations of Land Grabbing Against Assam Chief Minister
Gaurav Gogoi's Claims on Land Acquisition
Guwahati, Feb 4: The president of the Assam Congress, Gaurav Gogoi, has accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family of illegally acquiring approximately 12,000 bighas (over 3,960 acres) of land throughout the state. The ruling BJP has yet to respond to these serious allegations.
During a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan, Gogoi stated that the Congress party's internal investigation revealed what he termed as 'shocking findings'.
He claimed, 'The Chief Minister and his family have taken control of nearly 12,000 bighas of land in Assam,' emphasizing that this number could increase as the investigation continues.
Gogoi also mentioned that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has initiated a campaign to uncover the origins of the Chief Minister's wealth.
As part of this initiative, the party has launched a website named “Who Is HBS”, inviting the public to provide any information regarding Sarma's assets.
A special QR code has been created for digital submissions, and individuals can also share information via a helpline number – 9133400200, according to Gogoi.
Furthermore, Gogoi accused Sarma of reviving old allegations regarding his supposed connections to Pakistan to distract from the alleged land scam.
Sarma had previously stated he would disclose evidence concerning Gogoi's alleged links by September 10, 2025.
Gogoi questioned, 'Why didn't he present this evidence last September? He has been inactive for five months and suddenly remembers my supposed Pakistan connections.' He added, 'He is aware that we are compiling a dossier on his family's corruption and land acquisition, which is why this issue has resurfaced. I previously stated it would be a failed attempt, and I stand by that.'
In a surprising turn, even before the press conference concluded, APCC media department chairman Bedabrata Bora claimed that the newly launched website had been hacked.
During the conference, the website reportedly displayed the message 'HBS 2.0'. Bora alleged that the BJP's IT cell was responsible for the hacking.
However, there has been no immediate response from the BJP regarding these accusations.
