Court Grants Central Government Participation in Citizenship Matter

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has permitted the central government to become a party in a case concerning the citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The court has instructed the government to submit relevant records by April 6.

This ruling was made by Justice Subhash Vidyarthi during the hearing of a petition filed by S. Vignesh Shishir. The court allowed the central government to join as a respondent and directed it to present documentation related to the citizenship dispute at the next hearing.

During a previous session, the central government had requested that the case not be heard in open court, citing the confidential nature of documents received from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Consequently, the court had conducted proceedings in chambers.

The petitioner is challenging a January 28, 2026 order from a special MP/MLA court in Lucknow, which dismissed his plea to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi.

In his petition, Shishir has invoked provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act, and the Official Secrets Act, seeking the registration of a case regarding allegations related to Rahul Gandhi's citizenship and calling for a thorough investigation.
