Support for Mamata Banerjee

On Thursday, Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, met with TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, extending emotional support following her party's significant defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections. The meeting took place at the residence of the TMC chief in Kolkata, where Akhilesh also interacted with her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. According to reports from official TMC sources, Akhilesh reassured Mamata, stating, 'Didi, you have not lost.'

Discussion on Democratic Values

During the discussions with Mamata and Abhishek, Akhilesh commended their efforts, saying, 'You all fought admirably.' He expressed concerns that the recent events in Bengal have paved the way for the destruction of democracy, emphasizing that the BJP has inflicted unprecedented damage on democratic values. He noted that while voting occurred, many citizens did so under pressure rather than freely expressing their will.

Political Landscape in West Bengal

Akhilesh Yadav also addressed the political situation following the elections, reiterating his support for opposition unity against the BJP. In the wake of TMC's defeat, Mamata Banerjee has committed to strengthening the INDIA bloc. The BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly, achieving a two-thirds majority and ending TMC's 15-year rule, while TMC's representation fell to 80 seats.

Upcoming Swearing-In Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony for the BJP's first government in West Bengal is scheduled for May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape after years of being on the sidelines. While the identity of the next Chief Minister remains uncertain, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari is considered a frontrunner for the position, along with state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, and former Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta.
