Raijor Dal's Decision on Nagaon By-Election

Akhil Gogoi during a press briefing on Friday

Guwahati, July 3: As the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election approaches, Akhil Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal, announced on Friday that the party has not yet made a decision regarding contesting the election or supporting another party. A conclusive decision is expected during the State Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Saturday.

Gogoi mentioned that there are differing opinions within the party; some members advocate for fielding a candidate from Raijor Dal, while others suggest abstaining from the contest. He stated, "We will discuss this matter tomorrow and reach a final conclusion," during a press conference held at Shilpagram in Guwahati.

Addressing the party's alliance with Congress, Gogoi expressed skepticism about the benefits of supporting them, citing instances where Congress representatives have switched allegiances or compromised with the BJP.

He remarked, "Supporting Congress seems futile. If they succeed, they either align with the BJP or make compromises with them."

Gogoi emphasized the necessity for regional political parties in Assam to unite under a shared platform to effectively counter the BJP's influence.

He stated, "Assam's regional parties must come together. Division serves no purpose. Once united, we need to strategize on how to defeat the BJP."

When questioned about the possibility of Raijor Dal reassessing its alliance with Congress, Gogoi indicated that the party had not yet engaged in discussions on this topic.

"We are indifferent. Whether we stay in the alliance or exit, it doesn't significantly alter the situation. Forming an alliance just days before the Assembly elections is meaningless. We allied and faced a significant defeat, which we attribute to Congress. While the BJP was actively campaigning, Congress leaders were in Delhi waiting for tickets," he claimed.

Gogoi further asserted that Congress lacks the necessary organizational strategy to succeed in the current political climate.

"Congress does not possess the tactics needed to win elections today. This is their major issue," he added.

Previously, on June 7, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee convened a crucial meeting of its state leadership in Guwahati to discuss its future strategy.

Chaired by APCC president Gaurav Gogoi at Rajiv Bhawan, the meeting primarily focused on preparations for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, organizational reforms, and the party's broader political agenda.
