AJP Protests for Fast-Track Court in Zubeen Garg Case
Protest Demanding Justice
On February 27, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) organized a demonstration in Chachal, expressing frustration over the State government's failure to officially announce a fast-track court for the Zubeen Garg case, relying instead on verbal commitments.
The protest was spearheaded by AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who, along with party members, called for urgent measures to expedite justice.
AJP leader Chittaranjan Basumatary addressed the media, criticizing the government for only promising to contact relevant authorities about establishing a fast-track court without taking any definitive actions.
He stated, 'The fast-track court has not been officially declared. The Chief Minister has merely mentioned he would send a letter requesting it. We would appreciate and thank the government if they actually set up a fast-track court, but as of now, there has been no formal announcement.'
Basumatary highlighted that Garg's family is also advocating for a swift trial and accused the government of merely discussing the issue without implementing any real changes.
'The family is requesting a fast-track court, yet the government is only making statements without tangible actions. Their rhetoric seems to increase as elections approach, which raises questions about their commitment to justice,' he remarked.
He further raised concerns about the investigation's progress, noting that individuals involved in the incident abroad have not faced legal consequences.
'Those who were on the yacht in Singapore have not been brought back for legal proceedings. There are significant concerns regarding the investigation's integrity,' he added.
Basumatary criticized the charge sheet as inadequate and pointed out the reopening of businesses associated with the accused as suspicious.
'The charge sheet appears weak. The reopening of businesses linked to the accused raises further doubts. The Cabinet has only discussed the issue, with no conclusive decisions made. We demand justice before the elections,' he stated.
AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi accused the government of intentionally stalling the establishment of a fast-track court.
'They are aware that their charge sheet is weak, which is why they hesitate to form a fast-track court. They know the accused might be released due to legal loopholes. This delay reflects a lack of seriousness in delivering justice,' Gogoi asserted.
He also criticized the neglect of Zubeen Kshetra, claiming that the deteriorating condition of the area illustrates the government's indifference.
'Essential services like lighting and water have been cut off in Zubeen Kshetra, leaving it in disrepair. This indicates the government's lack of concern,' he said.
Gogoi promised that if AJP gains power, the party would prioritize justice and transform Zubeen Kshetra into a prominent tourist attraction.
'If we have the chance to govern, we will ensure justice and develop Zubeen Kshetra into one of the finest tourist destinations in the nation,' he concluded.
Recently, the State Cabinet approved the establishment of a dedicated fast-track court for the ongoing trial concerning the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The Chief Minister announced that the government would formally request the Gauhati High Court to set up a specialized sessions court for daily hearings in this case.
