Rahane Reflects on India's Test Struggles
Ajinkya Rahane, the former Indian cricketer, shared insights regarding India's decline in Test cricket over the last two years. He emphasized that the longer format requires a core of seven to eight experienced players, and the gradual departure of senior members has posed significant challenges for the two-time World Test Championship finalists. Rahane, who recently retired from international cricket, expressed these thoughts during an episode of the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast.
Transitioning Team Dynamics
Following India's unsuccessful bid for the ICC World Test Championship title in 2023, the team has seen a gradual shift away from its veteran players. Rahane and his middle-order partner, Cheteshwar Pujara, were among the first to exit the squad after the WTC final against Australia. In a short span, cricketing icons like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin also announced their retirements. This transition was marked by a disappointing home series loss to New Zealand in 2024 and a 1-4 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The Current Landscape of Indian Cricket
As of August 2026, most of the legendary players have retired from international cricket, with Rohit and Virat remaining active but focusing solely on ODIs. The only senior players from the batting lineup that thrived in the 2010s are KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, the latter advocating for a role as a specialist batter rather than an all-rounder. The new generation, led by skipper Shubman Gill, includes talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant, with additional players such as Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal being tested.
Challenges Ahead for India
India faced another setback last year, suffering a 0-2 series loss to South Africa at home, marking the first such defeat since the 1999-2000 season. Currently positioned fifth in the WTC standings, the team faces a challenging path ahead with upcoming away series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, along with a home series against Australia.
Rahane's Take on Senior Players in Test Cricket
During the podcast, Rahane remarked, "Test cricket fans are true lovers of the game. While new players have emerged in the Test arena over the past two years, I believe that a solid Test team requires seven to eight senior players alongside two to three younger ones. However, we are witnessing a scenario where most players are relatively new." He stressed the importance of respecting senior players, noting that their simultaneous departures have created a significant issue.
Upcoming Test Series Against Sri Lanka
India's two-match Test series against Sri Lanka is set to commence with the first match at Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to 19, followed by the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23 to 27.
