Sharma Endorses Nabi for National Selection

Ajay Sharma, a former Indian cricketer and current head coach for Jammu and Kashmir, has expressed strong support for Auqib Nabi, the standout bowler who topped the wicket-taking charts in the recent Ranji Trophy season. Sharma believes that Nabi deserves immediate consideration for the national Test team.

Having amassed over 10,000 runs in first-class cricket himself, Sharma anticipates that the selectors will face a tough task in finalizing the teams for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, predicting that around 10 to 11 players from his squad will be selected.

Nabi's Performance and Future Prospects

Sharma stated, "I am confident that Auqib Nabi will be included in the Test team. The selectors will also take note of players who excelled in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, and those who perform well may secure IPL contracts as well."

He added, "Having just clinched the Ranji Trophy, we previously had five players in the Duleep Trophy last year. Given our recent success, I believe the selectors will find it challenging to finalize the team, and I expect 10 to 11 players to participate in the Duleep Trophy."

Historic Victory for Jammu and Kashmir

Under the leadership of Paras Dogra, Jammu and Kashmir achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Ranji Trophy, ending a 67-year wait. They triumphed over the formidable Karnataka team, securing the championship with a significant first-innings lead of 291 runs, which proved too great for the eight-time champions to overcome.

Auqib Nabi: Player of the Tournament

Auqib Nabi emerged as the 'Player of the Tournament,' claiming 60 wickets across 10 matches with an impressive average of 12.56. His performance included two four-wicket hauls and seven five-wicket hauls, with his best figures being 7/24. The 29-year-old gained national recognition last season with 44 wickets in just eight matches, including six five-wicket hauls, and continued to excel during the knockout rounds.

Notable Contributions from Other Players

Jammu and Kashmir's Qamran Iqbal made significant contributions, scoring 471 runs in 10 innings at an average of 58.87, including two centuries and two fifties. In the final against Karnataka, he scored an unbeaten 160*, helping to extend J&K's lead to 633 runs and resulting in a draw.

Additionally, Abid Mushtaq, a spin all-rounder, had a noteworthy season, accumulating 445 runs in 10 matches at an average of 37.08, along with a century and a fifty. He also took 20 wickets, with his best performance being 7/68 against Hyderabad.

Reflections from Coach Ajay Sharma

Sharma reflected on the team's historic achievement, acknowledging the contributions of coaches, selectors, and the unity within the team. He noted that overcoming top teams both at home and away was a significant challenge, but their collective belief and teamwork made it possible.

"Initially, it was challenging for me to coach J&K, having played for Delhi. When BCCI President Mithun Manhas invited me, it took time to adjust. However, the hard work of the coaches and selectors over the past 3-4 years has led us to this historic moment," he remarked.

"We have defeated major champions both at home and in their own territory. The team's belief in working together, rather than relying on star players, has been crucial. Now, there will be heightened expectations for J&K, which will present its own challenges," he concluded.
